The Best Time of Year for a Wedding in Aruba and How It Affects Photography

Aruba is a stunning destination for weddings, with its endless sunshine, white-sand beaches, and vibrant landscapes. However, choosing the right time of year to get married here can make a big difference in everything from comfort to photo quality. As a photographer who has captured weddings in every season, I’m excited to share insights on Aruba’s seasonal conditions and how they can impact your wedding photos.

Aruba’s weather and seasons

One of the beauties of Aruba is its predictably sunny climate. Located outside the hurricane belt, Aruba enjoys warm weather year-round, with average temperatures around 82°F (28°C). This means that we don’t have the typical four seasons. Instead, there are two main seasons to consider when planning your wedding: the dry season and the “rainy” season.

  • Dry Season: January through September

  • Temperature: Warm and steady, averaging around 82-89°F (28-32°C)

  • Conditions: Clear skies, dry weather, low humidity

  • Photography Impact: This is the most popular season for weddings, as the consistently clear skies and sunlight create bright, vibrant photos. Morning and late afternoon shoots are ideal for soft, flattering light, while midday can bring high contrast, especially on the beach. But with the right angles and equipment, I can capture the vivid colors of Aruba’s waters and landscapes beautifully at any time of day.

  • Rainy Season: October through December

  • Temperature: Still warm, averaging 80-86°F (27-30°C)

  • Conditions: Occasional short rains, slightly higher humidity, with tropical showers often lasting only 15-20 minutes

  • Photography Impact: Aruba’s “rainy season” is mild compared to other tropical destinations. Light rains often clear up quickly, leaving fresh, clear skies and unique lighting conditions. This season offers a softer, slightly cooler light, which can bring out deeper, more natural tones in photos. Dramatic clouds after a brief rain can create stunning backdrops, adding depth and mood to your images. Not to mention the potential to have a gorgeous rainbow in the background of your wedding pictures.

Monthly breakdown for wedding photography in Aruba

January to March

  • Why Choose This Season: These months bring beautiful, mild weather. Winds are moderate, adding texture to shots without overwhelming the moment.

  • Photography Tip: With fewer crowds on the beaches, these months offer quieter, more intimate settings, which are perfect for couple portraits. The crisp light of the early months also creates clarity, making the blue water and white sand pop.

April to June

  • Why Choose This Season: During April through June, the island usually remains dry, with warmer temperatures but minimal rain. Aruba’s natural scenery is vibrant and lush, and the wind begins to calm, making it ideal for beach ceremonies and outdoor receptions.

  • Photography Tip: The warmer light enhances Aruba’s signature golden sunsets, adding romance and depth to sunset photos. I highly recommend scheduling portraits during the “golden hour,” i.e., the hour just before sunset, when the colors are at their richest.

July to September

  • Why Choose This Season: The island is in full bloom, with lush greenery and calm waters. This is a great time to take advantage of Aruba’s natural beauty and quieter beaches.

  • Photography Tip: With minimal cloud cover, July through September can have strong light during midday. Rest assured, by using creative angles and shade, I can still capture flattering, well-balanced shots that bring out the softest tones in skin and attire. Plus, sunset sessions are especially magical during these months, with long-lasting, vivid skies.

October to December

  • Why Choose This Season: Aruba’s “rainy” season adds a touch of refreshing tropical atmosphere to your wedding, with rain showers bringing a beautiful sheen to the island. Clouds add a dramatic element to photos and soften the harsh sunlight.

  • Photography Tip: I take advantage of the softer light and slightly overcast skies, which provide a natural diffuser and create the effect of dreamy, romantic photos without the need for much retouching. As mentioned previously, rainbows are common after a light shower, and the softened sunlight brings out rich, romantic tones in every shot.

Key factors in adapting wedding photography to Aruba’s conditions

Lighting Considerations

  • Sunshine: Aruba’s abundant sun is perfect for highlighting the vibrant scenery and colors of your wedding day. I always carry reflectors to balance direct sunlight, ensuring soft and natural portraits.

  • Golden Hour: The hour just after sunrise or before sunset is ideal for soft, warm lighting. Planning some of your photos around these times is key for getting those romantic, glowing shots.

  • Overcast Skies: Cloud cover during the rainy season diffuses light naturally, which allows me to capture even skin tones and delicate details. These conditions truly add a soft, natural touch to every shot.

    Wind and Movement

  • Windy Days: Aruba’s trade winds are usually steady but manageable, bringing energy and movement to your photos, especially beachside. I love using the wind to add natural motion to the veil, gown, and tropical greenery. The end result is always a dynamic, editorial-style image.

  • Quiet Moments: Some areas are naturally protected from the wind, allowing us to capture intimate, still moments that feel calm and serene.

    Rain Showers and Tropical Refresh

  • Rainy Season Tips: Light rain showers can make colors more vibrant and add a unique texture to your photos. In fact, I often use rain and mist creatively, whether it’s a rainbow in the distance or a just-cleared sky reflecting the sunlight, to capture dramatic and memorable images.

    Crowds and Locations

  • Low Season: During the “rainy” season and summer, beaches are less crowded, providing you with more privacy for intimate photos. Fewer people in the background allow us to create serene, personal images that focus entirely on you.

  • Hidden Gems: Aruba has secluded beaches, private coves, and breathtaking natural parks, providing picturesque settings away from the popular spots. As a local photographer, I know these unique locations well, giving you a variety of backdrops to match your style and vision. These are available year-round and will guarantee some breathtaking pictures.

Choosing the Best Season for Your Dream Wedding Photos

Each season in Aruba offers its own unique beauty and lighting for wedding photography. The dry season is ideal for vibrant, crystal-clear photos, while the rainy season adds a touch of mystery, mood, and depth to your images. No matter the time of year, I work closely with you to adapt to Aruba’s conditions, ensuring every shot is picture-perfect.
