Things you need to know before booking a photography session in Aruba

Planning a photography session on the picturesque island of Aruba? Whether it’s for your engagement, honeymoon, or special occasion, capturing moments against Aruba’s stunning backdrop is an incredible and unique experience. Using my expertise as a luxury destination photographer based here, I want to share some essential tips to help you prepare for your photography session and ensure you get the most out of your time in our tropical paradise.

Research and Plan Ahead

  • Location Scouting: Aruba offers a diverse range of landscapes—from white sandy beaches and rocky shores to lush gardens and historic sites. Research locations that resonate with your vision and discuss them with your photographer. As it happens, I was born and raised here, so I can definitely point you in the right direction when it comes to location

  • Timing: Consider scheduling your session during the golden hour (early morning or late afternoon) for soft, golden light that enhances Aruba’s natural beauty. I can assure you that the photos you get during this time will truly blow your mind.

Dress comfortably and appropriately

  • Weather Awareness: Aruba has a warm climate year-round. This being the case, it’s always best practice to dress in lightweight, breathable fabrics so that you can stay comfortable. Plus, it never hurts to bring layers for cooler evenings if your session extends into sunset.

  • Footwear: Depending on your chosen location, consider footwear that allows for easy movement on sand or uneven terrain. I would advise you to bring flip-flops or sandals for beach sessions. Pro tip: You might also want to bring a towel with you just in case you end up wading in the water (or getting fully submerged!)

Prepare for Aruba’s elements

  • Sun Protection: Pack sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses to protect your skin and eyes from the strong Caribbean sun. Good news is, if you need any extra, I always have some handy! Just one of the perks of choosing a local photographer.

  • Wind Considerations: Aruba’s trade winds can be refreshing but may also affect hair and flowy clothing. Plan hairstyles and outfits accordingly. A light scarf or fabric weight can add movement and elegance to your photos. Additionally, adding a little hairspray after you’ve finished styling your hair can work wonders.

Stay hydrated and energized

  • Water: Aruba’s warm climate can be dehydrating, especially when you’re spending an extended period of time in the sun. Bring a water bottle to stay hydrated throughout your session.

  • Snacks: Pack light snacks to keep your energy levels up, specifically during longer sessions or breaks between locations.

Communicate with your photographer

  • Discuss Expectations: Share your vision, preferences, and any specific shots you’d like to capture with your photographer beforehand. I ask all my clients for any Pinterest boards they created and/or previous shoots of mine they may have liked the look of so that I can get an idea of what they’re looking for.

  • Relax and Have Fun: Your photographer is there to guide you and capture your natural moments. Trust their expertise, and enjoy the experience. Personally, I always work to bring a good energy and vibe to the session and make sure to truly connect with my clients.
